Memling
Motif Needlepoint Kit - Color
combinations may be selected to fit decorations. Shown above
is the back of the packaged needlepoint kit with a reproduction
of the Original painting titled Jug of Flowers c. 1485 by Hans Memling. Instructions are written in both English
and Spanish - with detailed diagrams for a beginner.
In
this painting - we discovered the three rows of Guls - containing
different shaped crosses and separated by diamond-stems. This still
life painting has on its reverse side the portrait of a man and
is at the same time the recto of a closed diptych - most likely
for the adoration of the Virgin Mary.
In
reading this still life - the Christian Symbolism is not to be overlooked.
In the pilgrim´s vase we find together several floral symbols for
the Virgin Mary: lilies - irises and columbines ( divine grace -
innocence - forgiveness and yearning to be with God ). These symbols
make up an essential part of the border of a number of paradise-gate
carpets.

The
earliest depiction of this type of carpet is to be found somewhat
earlier in the book of hours of an unknown French Master from around
1460. In a scene King René of Anjou´s novel Cuer d´Amour Apris - we find a Memling Gul Carpet depicted beside a cross-block carpet.
Judging from this picture - it is a long - narrow runner - containing
two sets of five Memling Guls - each in turn filled with cross stars.
In the negative area between the Guls we find diamonds filled with
crosses - the diamonds being joined together along the central vertical
axis by cross pieces which form stems. The border contains the familiar
opposed cross-leaf halves.
About
the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection
As
you know - The Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Collection is considered the
finest in the World. Heir to the great Thyssen steel fortune - Baron
Thyssen-Bornemisza used a splendid villa on the shores of lake
Lugano to display some paintings from his extraordinary collection.
Perhaps
due to the Spanish origins of his fifth wife - Carmen Cevera - nearly
800 paintings from his collection were loaned to Spain for a decade and are now permanently located in the Villahermosa Palace in Madrid.
A grand neoclassical structure from the early 19th century - the
palacio was renovated to house the collection at a cost to the Spanish
government of some $45 million. 100 additional works are exhibited
in Barcelona.
