Napoleon
II Needlepoint
Napoleon
II - 19
inches square (design) - canvas size 27 inches square - 12 mesh - Copyright
1999 Jan Voich
The original
colors were the bold colors typical of the Napoleon II era. To reproduce
this needlepoint chair cover - we first charted the original - by hand
counting and - re-counting each needlepoint stitch meticulously.
Many days
were spent selecting the nineteen colors which would later be used to
stitch the new needlepoint reproduction. Working off of the chart - mistakes
were made - removed - re-stitched and the reproduction was complete after
three months of complete dedication. The finished Needlepoint Kit and
Canvas as a completed product required many more weeks and months
- until the colors of canvas and the chart were faithful to this original
needlepoint.
We are planning
to recreate this design in different background colors very soon.
 These
photographs of Napoleon II were sent to us from a customer ( and
now - *Our Stitching Friend - from Minneapolis* ) - who chose a pillow
finishing.
Others
have made this chair cover into fire screens.

The Empire
Style
The
Empire style was derived from classical motifs brought back into
style at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Its
name is taken from the French Empire of Napoleon I - whose court
adopted classical designs discovered in the archaeological excavations
of Pompeii and Herculaneum early in the nineteenth century. The ancient
furniture forms of the classical Greeks and Romans - discovered in these
ruins - gained new popularity during the Empire period.
Typical
Empire Motifs include the acanthus leaf ( leaf of a Mediterranean shrub
) - anthemion ( stylized honeysuckle ) - animal-paw feet - cornucopia
( horn of plenty ) - dolphin - eagle - lyre and rosette. For ornamentation
- gilt stenciling was popular as was the use of ormolu ( a type of brass
made to imitate gold ).
Napoleon
II
Napoleon
II (1811-1832) - carried the titled - Duke of Reichstadt - and
son of Emperor Napoleon I of France and his second wife - Marie Louise
of Austria. Napoleon I had long hoped for a son to inherit his empire
- thus awarding his newborn boy the title - King of Rome.
When
overthrown in 1814 - Napoleon I gave up the throne in favor of this young
son - however - the French Senate would not recognize Napoleon II as emperor
- - and Louis XVIII - a member of the Bourbon royal family - became king
of France that year.
Marie
Louise then took her son to live at the court of her father - Emperor
Francis I of Austria.
Even
after Napoleon I was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 - he again
proclaimed his son emperor of France - however - the French again refused
to give the young boy the throne - and he remained in Austria. His mother*s
family gave him the title of Duke of Reichstadt in 1818. Napoleon II was
never strong - and he grew into a tall - slender youth. He died of
tuberculosis at the age of 21 and was buried in the Habsburg ( or Hapsburg
) family*s church tomb in Vienna.
In
1940 - Adolph Hitler - dictator of Germany - had the body placed near
that of Napoleon I in the Eglise du Dome ( Church of the Dome )
at the Hotel des Invalides ( Home for Disabled Soldiers ) in Paris.
Napoleon II was born in Paris.
