Grammar of Ornament - written in 1856 by Owen Jones - inspired the borders
- a stationary fret - around the central section of this Needlepoint creation.
( William Morris was greatly influenced by Jones reflecting his
basic design philosophy - as was the Art Nouveau movement ). We added
a gold and mint green to the fret.
This
Stationary Fret contrasts the flowing movement of the Alphabet and the
superimposed flowers - thus quietly accenting their action rather than
competing with it. Again
- a comforting harmony is imposed as the fret repeats itself around the
central square.
The
Hydrangeas are successfully depicted using spots of pale lavender and
careful touches of damson nestled inside of the white petals. The Leaves
are outlined with a Forest Green. The sudden addition of these four new
colors adds a three dimensional life to finalize this needlepoint creation.
