The Four Different Needlepoint Borders - 10 mesh - each strip design measures 37.2 x 6 inches ( 94.5 x 15 cm. ) - are a collection of historical 17th century tile designs from Talavera de la Reina - Spain reproduced into a needlepoint rug.
The Four Different Designs may be acquired together - as kits or the canvases only - to make the carpet seen here - and other rugs of different dimensions by adding more strips sideways.
Tiles have been a delightful additions to architecture throughout history. We have chosen these classical designs as the basis of this needlepoint collection.
The Frets in the Heraldic Borders are a classical design dating back to the Greeks - it does not form a continuous meander - creating a more stationary effect. The small Heraldic motifs represent the small tiles inserted into larger - plain floor tiles - typical in Spanish and Mexican floor and wall decoration.
The Heraldic Borders may be used separately as bell pulls or to pull back drapes. These designs have a multitude of purposes. Panels of the same size may be stitched individually and then joined together to make needlepoint rugs of varying sizes and design combinations - fire screens - table covers - bench covers or bed boards.
